What Is, Columbia: the life and death of Rospo D. Oro?

Image

There’s a simple answer: Columbia is a new musical directed by Liz Muller, with book and music by Collin Simon, and lyrics by Liz Muller.

The more complex answer: Columbia is a romantic, comedy, drama, adventure, fantasy, musical based on Kenneth Grahame’s The Wind in the Willows.

Then there’s the multiple choice answer:

A.) The life and death of Rospo D. Oro
B.) The story of searching for your destiny
C.) Who knows!
D.) Anything you want it to be
E.) All of the above

For the answer, turn your computer upside down.

Toad’s Wild Ride

Actually, there aren’t any toads in this version – or rats, or badgers.  In fact, the story is only loosely based on The Wind in the Willows.  For those who haven’t read the story, don’t worry – you don’t need to!  And for those that have read the story; there will be plenty of surprises for you – trust me.  Even after you’ve seen the show once, you’ll want to come back again to get all the fun side stories, references, and symbolism – well, that, and you’ll want to hear the songs and see the wonderful performance again and again.

Columbia is a story with something for everyone.  You can watch it as just an exciting tale, or you can delve in deeper to the many different meanings and story lines.  In fact, it’s hard for me to even write about it without giving things away!

At it’s most literal, the story is of a man, Rospo D. Oro, with a mysterious past, obsessed with vehicles – always trying to go farther and faster.  His flagship vehicle, Columbia, is his pride and joy.  With the help of an orphan named Jewels, he continues to modify and improve it.  Along the way, he meets many colorful characters that both help and hinder him in his quest.  The help comes with the hunt for Rospo’s perpetual motion engine, the M.I.U.  The hindering comes from the townsfolk and law that are none too happy with the accidental destruction Columbia causes when Rospo takes it rocketing through the streets of Cradle Island and the forest villages of The Wild Woods.

Each of the other characters have their own hopes and dreams, and forces helping and hindering them as well.  There’s Netty, Radcliffe, Jewels, Aric, Pan, Handsome John, Lady Atrous, Doctor Fish, The Chairman, and more.  Don’t worry, we’ll get into all of them in the next few blogs – along with the mysterious creatures; The Obscure, the world of Columbia, and more.  Can’t wait till then?  Go over to the official site and watch the trailer HERE.

Keep checking the blog and your email for more articles when they become available.  And while you’re waiting, you might as well head over the the Telecharge site and buy your tickets HERE.  If you buy the whole house you get to hang out with the cast and crew after the show for a Q&A and hugs… Okay, maybe no Q&A, but definitely hugs.

Dance! Also other things!

I hope everyone is excited for (even) MORE DANCE this weekend! I know I am. And I’m sure you’ve already all made your reservations, because if you remember from last year, our one performance was packed full. So you wouldn’t want to make the mistake of not reserving with us at tickets@pipedreamtheatre.com or buying your tickets here: http://www.woovite.com/moredance2013.

Might I even suggest making a weekend out of it? For instance you can start by watching the entirety of last year’s performance on our YouTube channel. Then you can sit on the couch and cry because you know you just aren’t that graceful and play video games until the world doesn’t seem real anymore. Then you can come out and be AMAZED by the new performances premiering at Bronxville.

AND if you do all this on Saturday you may even want to wash, rinse, repeat it for Sunday.

[ed. note: No. Of course this isn’t my plan for this weekend. Why on Earth are you all staring in my direction?]

Here’s the info in the standard shiny banner format (click to embiggen):

even more dance

ALSO! Are you signed up for our newsletter? You should be, because it is informative, and regularly scheduled, and pretty, and it doesn’t sound like the person who wrote it is sleep deprived (AKA the opposite of this). It’s SUPER EASY! All you have to do is email info@pipedreamtheatre.com and put “newsletter” in the subject line. That way we’ll know that you want to join our mailing list. Here’s an HTML version of February’s NL to entice you even further.

And here’s an arbitrary poll:

See you this weekend!

Massive Info-Dump of Awesomeness!

So as the title so eloquently informs you this post is going to be a LONG one (because some of us are bad at time management.) Make sure to keep on scrolling!

Firstly:

Thank you so much to everyone who came out to Steamprom! We had a BLAST and I’m sure you did too. I don’t mean to put words in your mouth, but you know it’s the truth. I mean look at these pictures!

See? ALL THE FUN!

Nextly:

New fan photo! One of our fearless leaders took her PiPE DREAM shirt on a cruise (it fit better in her suitcase than I did. I obviously lost that attempt at a sneaky vacation.) Head over to the Fan Photo page to see the awesome.

Lastly:

MIDSUMMER!

Yes, it is upon us. A Midsummer Night’s Dream premieres next Thursday at Bronxville. And I gotta be honest – it’s funny. Like actually funny. I don’t mean it’s a Shakespearean comedy and we should all do well to have a chuckle over the syntax funny. It has actual laugh out loud moments that will have you in stitches. Or busting out of stitches if you already have stitches to begin with. You know what? If you have stitches I would suggest skipping out on this one.

Also if you notice the details on the poster, tickets are only a suggested $5 donation so there’s that. You can’t even park at the beach for $5! We’ll be performing in the garden (if it rains the show is still on, just moved inside) and you are welcome to bring any food or beverage you like to enjoy during the show! Adult beverages even!

Seriously, unless you are rocking some heavy duty stitches I wouldn’t miss out on this one.

Steamprom Update and Contest = AWESOME!

Steamprom! STEAMPROM! You guys – it’s this Saturday! PAARRRRTTYYYYY!

Remember to get your tickets ahead of time at: http://www.woovite.com/steamprom You’ll be saving yourself $10! Also, I mean, really, buying things off the internet is all the rage, so you should want to buy these ahead of time. Admit it: you need the cool points.

Something else I feel honor bound to mention is that you don’t have to come dressed all Steampunk-y. I mean you can – I plan on looking like a crazy person. But what we want more than you coming dressed in gears and lace is you coming and having fun! So come whatever you wear. Sundress? Perfect!  Furry? Strange, but I’ll allow it. Yankee t-shirt and jeans? Go forth! I’ll be giving you death glare personally, but that nothing to do with how good you look in those Levi’s and more to do with my deep seated hatred of the Bombers. So yeah – the clothes don’t matter us. Just come and party and all will be good.

We also have a contest running – YEAH! If you follow our Facebook Page you’ve seen that we need a good URL for Liz’s website and Lizmuller[dot]com is already taken. Reply in comments with you suggestion either here or on FB and the winner will receive an arms-length of raffle tickets for Steamprom. Which you know you want because our raffles are EPIC.

Steamprom also got itself an article in the Bronxville Daily Voice – CLICK TO READ!

I hope to see you all this Saturday – be it in your costumes, sundresses, or jeans. (I’ll just be averting my eyes from your torso, you Jeter-loving crazy pants.)

Full Steam Ahead – Steamprom is Almost Here!

Another blog post? Already? Why that’s just absurd, why would I do that?

(I’ve been DYING to use that gif, thank you for letting me get away with it)

OK so in all serious, this is HUGE news, guys! Steamprom is officially less than a month away, on July 14th. Four weeks until the greatest summer party ever! (next to the ones from the 50s where everyone just does the twist for hours on end and apparently Elvis shows up – those always looked like a blast, daddio.)

For all your information needs see below: (ooh official!)

You can purchase tickets, as well as PiPE DRINK bracelets for those of you 21 and over, here: http://www.woovite.com/steamprom in order to enjoy the pre-order discount.

If you’ve been to one of our fundraising bashes before you know a better time really isn’t to be found anywhere. Costumes, contests, BOSS RAFFLES, merch, INCREDIBLE food, and a brand new performance of Distorted music.

Honestly I don’t think I’ve ever been more excited for anything than I am for Distorted, volume 3 (and while we all know that’s not technically true as I am a nerd of ridiculous proportions, you can believe my sentiment is genuine)

So make sure to get your tickets now! You can also check out the Facebook event and share your enthusiasm here: http://www.facebook.com/events/161365900655149/

And FYI – I plan on winning Steamprom Queen – just letting you know. You best bring your A game kids. *cue mic drop here*

The First of Many Updates

Hooray! I love updates! I love them because I get to remind you all of all of the awesome things we’ve posted that you should check out and all of the even awesomer things we may have coming up. Huzzah!

I’m in a good mood today, can ya tell?

FIRST of all, have you watched the full video of More Dance yet? Cause you should. Yes, I know. It’s been out for a while, but um hello we’re doing UPDATES!

And while I’m embedding YouTube videos, I have to remind, beg, implore you even, to watch it on YouTube. To subscribe to our channel there and comment and like the video there. I know it sounds silly, but it helps us out a TON. Trust me on this: I majored in being on consistently on the internet.

If you enjoyed More Dance (and as you are human and have a beating heart I’m going to assume you did) and don’t mind clicking on another link I’m going to send you to like a page on Facebook. Diana Pettersen, one of our three choreographers from More Dance, has a page up, for you to check out here: http://www.facebook.com/PettersenChoreography So head over there if you don’t mind. *bats eyelashes*

That’s all for this one – I don’t want to flood you with too much instruction (AWESOME instruction). There is a ton of information about our next two shows coming down the pipe shortly, so keep an eye out for that.
